Among the most coveted gemstones, the Colombian emerald captivates as much through its unique colour as through the complex history that surrounds it.
This lecture aims to retrace its major milestones, from its extraction by the Muisca people long before the arrival of Europeans, to the rediscovery of the forgotten mines of Chivor at the end of the 19th century.
Through a historical and well-documented approach, the speakers will explore the various chapters of its story: the Spanish conquest and appropriation of mining sites, the organisation of exploitation under colonial rule, the export of the gems via the Spanish Treasure Fleet, and their appearance at the courts of the Mughal emperors.
